Professional Background

As a Research Assistant at the University of Witwatersrand's Centre of Immigration, Anold has focused their research on the unique challenges faced by queer migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. Their work specifically addresses critical issues surrounding documentation, shelter access, and sexual and reproductive health services.

Working extensively with asylum seekers from Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria, and other African nations where same-sex relations face severe criminalization, Anold has developed deep insights into the challenges faced by LGBTIQ+ individuals seeking refuge. They have successfully coordinated with NGOs to connect migrants and asylum seekers with essential services, including food, clothing, accommodation, legal aid, and counseling.

Their commitment to advocacy extends beyond direct service, as they actively engage in fundraising initiatives to support LGBTIQ+ migrants in their settlement journey. Through partnerships with various organizations, they help facilitate the settlement process for LGBTIQ+ migrants and asylum seekers in South Africa and other countries of refuge.

Drawing from their own experiences as an LGBTIQ+ asylum seeker, Anold brings a unique perspective and deep understanding to their work. Their personal journey, chronicled in "Seeking Sanctuary: Stories of Sexuality, Faith, and Migration" (2021), serves as both inspiration and testament to the resilience of queer migrants.
